Holistic Nutrition is not only about food

Best friends are people who will wear matching Christmas PJs with you. 😀

I often talk about the dietary parts of “holistic nutrition”, but emotional and mental well-being is another very important part of life that holistic nutritionists focus on.

Having a community (small or large) is key to your overall health.

The reality is, having a community and strong friendships that you can rely on when times get tough is crucial to mental and physical health. Good friendships can benefit our mental health in so many ways: Friends reduce stress, make us laugh, help us feel known and understood, motivate us to take care of ourselves and reach higher, and fulfill the basic need of belonging.

A Harvard study showed that weak social connections are associated with a reduction in lifespan similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day and even greater than that associated with obesity.

Studies have revealed biological theories that may explain what makes us healthier when we feel supported: lower blood pressure, better hormone function, stronger immune systems and lower levels of inflammation.

It is also worth making a conscious effort to be the kind of friend you’d like people to be for you. That includes being supportive, being there when friends need you, having fun together and making an effort to really listen.....no matter how busy your life is!

I am grateful every single day for the special women, men, and children who make up my community.

Happy holidays to you and yours. 🎄💕
