Your gut is responsible for so much more than you might think – from proper nutrient absorption to healthy immune system function. Your gut can even influence the state of your mind (your gut manufactures most of you body’s serotonin!).
Many facets of modern life such as high stress levels, too little sleep, eating processed and high-sugar foods, and taking antibiotics can all damage our gut microbiome. This in turn may affect other aspects of our health. Often people do not even realize they have an unhealthy gut microbiome, because they are not experiencing typical upset stomach issues.
Having an unhealthy gut can manifest itself in many ways (see diagram above!). And if you take care of your gut, many of your other health goals will be achieved much easier.
There are many simple things that you can do to improve gut health.
Examples include but are not limited to:
1. Lowering your stress levels
2. Getting enough sleep
3. Eating slowly
4. Staying hydrated
5. Taking a prebiotic or probiotic
6. Checking for food intolerances
7. Changing your diet (increase fibre!)
